Ely Fact File
Ely was built on a 23 square mile island (Kimmeridge Clay) which was the highest point of land in the Fens.
Much dispute surrounds the origin of the town's name but one theory is that is was named after the eels that could be found in its surrounding waters.
The town has held annual fairs since the 12th Century and the Medieval seven day St Audreys Fair was famous for selling cheap trinkets and baubles, and hence the derivation of the word tawdry from St Audrey.
Ely is a cathedral city but was only granted city status in 1974 by Royal Charter.
A cannon gifted to Ely by Queen Victoria in 1860 is located on Palace Green, west of the cathedral, it was captured during the Crimean War at the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855).
