A local tradition states that Chatteris was Boudica's final refuge as she fled from the Romans.
The town was documented in the eleventh century Domesday Book as 'Cetriz' and 'Cateriz'.
The highest point of the Fens lays within the boundary of Chatteris and for a majrity of its history, the town formed a raised island surrounded by low-level wetlands.
